Unit 36 Game Platforms Technology (P1 M1 D1)

Video game consoles have come along way since 1947 with the invention of the Cathode Ray Tube. This paved the way for home consoles and gaming as a whole for the 20th century. Now we have the  Xbox One, the PS4 and the Oculus Rift.

Brown Box
Let's jump ahead to 1967 with the invention of the Brown Box which was made by a single man Ralph H Baer. Even though this console was a prototype and was never sold to the public the console had two player joystick controller that were compatibility, the games were cartridge based and it was the first console to have the ability to project the game onto the television screen.

However the console is now out dated and has extremely out of date hardware as a result has minimal graphics quality.

Galaxy Game
In 1971 the first arcade machine arrived on the scene  the Galaxy Game which was similar to the Magnavox's graphics style of using an orb of light. The machine was coin operated accepting 10 cents to play one game or 25 to play 3 games which is pretty cheap compared to todays prices. This lead to becoming a productive piece of revenue and the creation of arcades. A lot like the Magnavox and the brown box its hardware was minimal and the quality of the graphics was minimal. The console did not feature any sound devices or marque as a result their was no sound output from the games. In 1979 it was taken off the market due to the display processor becoming unreliable.

Magnavox Odyssey
1 year later the Magnavox Odyssey hit the market in 1972 yet again created by Ralph H Baer but under the company Magnavox, the console featured two controllers for two player compatibility it also included cartridge based games and allowed the TV to project the game on the screen. This console also included no sound devices and out of date hardware with limited graphics as a result you had to use transparent coloured overlay with different patterns or colours to insinuate graphics on the games these overlays told the player what game it was e.g. tennis pattern was tennis game the overlay which was 21 to 24 inches and was used to change the game. The console did not feature any kind of sound output as the technology was limited.

Emulators
Emulators are a piece of software that can be installed onto a PC that makes other game platform games such as a PS2 believe that it is running off a PS2 and allows the user to play the game on the PC.

Micro Vision

In 1979 the first handheld console hit the market made by Milton Bradley, the Microvision. The Microvision was a lot like the consoles at the time it included a small joystick controller and game cartridges for the games. However the disadvantages of the console were that it did not include many games and it was quite expensive.

Atari 5200
A decade later the Atari 5200 hit the shelf in 1984 made by the game company Atari it included two controllers and cartridge games. However the early version of the 5200  had a horrible hazard of electrocuting the user when they try to plug it in this was due to the power supply being too much for the hardware to handle as a result was re-designed and put back on the market  with 4 controller slots instead of 2 which was a more safer version. To our standards the hardware on a 5200 is minimal as a result the graphics is very limited in detail. Its controller also malfunctioned on a regular basis as a result broke down a lot the controllers also included controllers that had too many button which did little to nothing. The console was out of date compared to the other consoles at its time as it was still using 8 bit graphics when 16 bit graphics was in its early stages.

Sega Saturn
Jump another decade to 1994 the Sega Saturn came out the first SEGA console that could read disks. The console was compatible with 32 bit graphics as a result the games on the console looked quite attractive to todays standards. It included two controllers for 2 player multiplayer compatibility. However it did not include a network card as a result could not have global multiplayer compatibility.

Hagenuk MT - 2000

In 1994  the Hagenuk MT -2000 mobile phone became the first mobile phone to play games, the first game to go on it was the popular game known as Tetris. The games were played by pressing the number pad. However the mobiles screen was very small and dark as a result the user could see little to nothing on it unless you had a bright light source.

NVidia GTX 780Ti Gaming PC
Jump ahead to modern day where we now have gaming PC's like the NVidia GTX 780Ti Gaming PC  which was released in 2013. The NVidia GTX has a motherboard that can support very powerful hardware such as processors, graphics cards, and RAM over 4 giga bytes as it's 64bit compatible.

As for input interfaces device the NVidia GTX 780 is compatible mainly with a mouse, however it is also compatible with console controllers such as the PS3  and Xbox 360 controllers that have a USB cable.

The PC also comes with internet compatibility allowing online multiplayer and verbal communication with people all around the world.

Games on this gaming PC and on any other gaming PC can be played via disks or even floppy with the right equipment. However modern games are now played through digital downloading as it's faster to buy and gain access to, due to the fact package delivery or purchasing is cut out of the equation and it puts the game straight onto the PC via download, which as a result has made most video game rental places lose business.

However the downside to the NVidia GTX 780Ti Gaming PC or any gaming PC is that in order to upgrade the machines hardware to play performance demanding games you have to pay hundreds of pounds to get top of the range hardware for the machine. You also have to spend money on the games as well which makes this platform more expensive. There is also the fact you have to pay the internet service provider in order to get faster download speeds and access to the Internet and online multiplayer.

Interactive Television
Interactive television is a television package that has settings that can be customised using your remote it also includes digital extras such as a digital Television guide or a red button option for extra content. ITV features family settings that limit the child from accessing specific channels. It also includes limited internet usage limited to on demand iplayers

However it is not really a gaming platform as it as the hardware is limited to support television viewing and basic red button games.
Enhanced television
Enhanced television has all the settings that Interactive television has however it has full Internet browsing and the ability to stream personal videos or movies from your PC to the television screen.

However the hardware within an enhanced television is limited to gaming, as most games are not compatible and ones that are compatible are flash games or red button extras. As well as limited  controls as the controller is a standard TV remote.
